Youth Musical Theatre Classes
These classes teach fundamental skills of stage acting, singing, and dancing, thus promoting confidence and success on stage.
Classes are for ages 7–14 and take place on Saturdays, January 28–March 17 (eight sessions) at the Isabelle Reader Theatre in Spencer Middle School, 1026 Goldstream Ave., Langford.
This eight week session of three hour classes aims to teach the fundamental skills of musical theatre: acting, singing, and dancing. Students will gain an understanding in the following disciplines. Presence at all sessions, punctuality, and respect for the work and classmates is expected. Classes run from 9am till noon.
VOICE:
Learn the basics of healthy singing through breathing and vocal exercises. Develop musical skills as a solo, or in a group, in various styles. Establish the connection of voice, acting, and movement specific to musical theatre. Develop good work habits and discipline in a fun learning environment. Learn about proper warm ups and exercises for voice, group singing in unison and harmony.
DANCE:
Learn basic musical theatre steps, body awareness, safety onstage, group coordination
ACTING:
This class teaches basic acting and stagecraft: from creating characters to voice projection and movement. It also teaches how to focus, connect with your fellow actors, and adapt to surprises. The end result will be a young actor with more on-stage confidence, less inhibitions, and more ability to communicate to an audience. Theoretical and practical technique, voice projection and vocal health, as well as taking direction will also be a focus.
We will also cover crew responsibilities and how cast and crew work together to create theatre. Between them the two instructors have over forty years of experience in acting, singing, dancing, crew, and production positions in professional and community productions. Not every child will be a triple threat, but every child can benefit from learning about expressing themselves, listening to others, moving with intention, and having fun with theatre. By the end of these classes the students will be well prepared to participate in musical theatre scenes and dance numbers. We might even put together a show for parents and friends to see!
